Why We Invested – FleetPulse

At Ironspring, we’re all about the latest technologies for making and moving things. Often, these improve how we design, build, operate, and distribute using critical but often overlooked assets across the industrial supply chain. Trailers caught our attention as one such asset ripe for modernization. Trailers do not move without a truck, but equally, trucks do not have a job to do without a trailer! We’re proud to share our investment in FleetPulse, which is transforming the roughly $800B trucking industry in the US by making trailers smarter.

For the roughly four million class 8 trailers in the United States, there has been a persistent issue of complexity and lack of visibility across a fleet. Historically, companies have used a patchwork of homegrown or combined systems to capture trailer data on maintenance, uptime, and safety. And while those unfamiliar with this market may think that a trailer is just a ‘box on wheels’, modern day trailers are now highly sophisticated assets with ample digitization applications: wheel temperature and vibration, tire inflation/deflation, braking pressure and disc systems, accelerometer and weight readings/signals, exterior camera applications, door positioning and intelligence, backup sensors and lighting, interior cargo cameras and temperature sensors, solar panel applications, GPS locating devices, tank pressure sensors, and so many more trailer-specific applications. While most of these solutions have typically been focused on the truck and in-cab telematics, almost no one has catered to bringing modern technologies to the trailer.

FleetPulse serves as a trailer diagnostics platform, digitizing data inputs and offering visibility on the trailer itself, enabling many trailer-related improvements in safety, reliability, cargo security, and efficiency that are unattainable with traditional, truck-focused telematics solutions. With FleetPulse technology, the trailer becomes a smart asset, eliminating the need to manage multiple telematics suppliers, integrate raw sensor data, or build a solution in-house. This streamlined approach better informs operations, maintenance, and investment decisions. Actionable insights also enable fleets to operate more sustainably, from savings on fuel to encouraging preventative maintenance. And the company is able to offer its powerful end-to-end visibility into trailer safety and cargo security across the freight industry as it serves customers with OEM-agnostic wired and aftermarket telematics offerings.

FleetPulse was founded in 2017 as a business unit within Great Dane, a leading manufacturer of high-performance commercial transportation equipment including dry, refrigerated, and platform trailers. To capture the sizeable market opportunity in rolling out its telematics platform across the wider freight industry, FleetPulse became a separate company in the fall of last year. CEO Carl Christoph “CCR” Reckers and CPO Mohan Krishnamurthy bring an impressive blend of freight industry, technology, and company building expertise to leading FleetPulse, and we’re extremely proud to partner with these strong executives as they expand the team, enhance the product, and accelerate commercialization efforts.

FleetPulse’s transformative trailer technology will create new and unique value across the freight industry, and we’re thrilled to support CCR, Mohan, and the entire FleetPulse team as they build off of the company’s rapid initial market traction with the product enabled on tens of thousands of units (across the US, Canada, and Mexico) and the technology’s demonstrated impact for customers. Trailer technology promises to catalyze innovation in transport and logistics, and FleetPulse is well positioned to take on this challenge and opportunity. Keep truckin FleetPulse!
